The following technology priorities were discussed at a meeting attended by Alan Candiotti, Neil
Clarke, Bill Rogers and Dean James Pain on September 18, 1998.

1.  Video classroom

The Graduate School wishes to use the interactive video facilities in order to conduct a
program in Medical Humanities with UMDNJ (which may set up similar facilities).  The
equipment we have from the NJIN grant is appropriate for this use.  We need to find appropriate
space so that it can be set up permanently as a video classroom.  The classroom would house the
video equipment and approximately twelve seats.  It could be used as a regular classroom when
the video equipment is not in use.  (See Note 1)

2.  Multimedia capable PC's for faculty members and classrooms.

3.  Mediation of SWB 204.

4.  Use of the LAN, including remote access, by students and faculty.

5.  Computers and training for affiliate faculty

The Graduate School employs a number of affiliate faculty members who hold part time
appointments for many years.  Current University funding does not provide computers for them
and they are not always aware of and eligible for faculty training and development in technology.
The Graduate School wishes for these affiliate faculty members to receive computers and to
participate in faculty development and training.

6.  Use of writing classroom

Graduate students in English teach English 1 and use of the networked writing classroom
is important for their training in teaching writing.

Note 1:  There was an earlier plan to house the video classroom in the space now occupied by the television studio.  This plan has two serious drawbacks.  Since the space is also used for
non-classroom functions as a TV studio, seating would have to be on folding chairs and tables.
This would require significant set up and break down time before and after each use as a video
classroom.  In addition, the student television organization, DUST, has become significantly
more active in using the TV studio, and it would be impractical for the space to support both
functions at the anticipated level of usage.  The TV studio is also used as a base for producing the
commencement videotape. All attendees agreed that it would be preferable for the University to
allocate classroom space for the video classroom function and allow that space to be used as a
regular classroom when the video equipment is not in use, or to rearrange current space in a way
that both functions could be effectively accommodated.
