Introduction
Europe is America’s most
important regional partner in global affairs. The relationship is
rooted not only in historic ties and a common cultural heritage, but
also in such contemporary areas of cooperation as international
political and security matters, and trade and investment. The level of
importance of this transatlantic relationship, as well as the areas of
political, cultural, and commercial interaction, suggests that European
interests, people and organizations must be present to a significant
degree in American society. The purpose of this website is to provide
information to interested parties about Europe’s presence in American
society.
The Project
Beginning in the Fall semester, 2003, students who were enrolled in
classes about Europe and European-American relations at Drew
University, in Madison, NJ, have organized and carried out research and
interviewed representatives of organizations, businesses, and
communities, primarily in the New Jersey and greater New York City
area, to determine the presence and impact of Europe in America. Prof.
William B. Messmer, of the Drew Political Science Department is the
project coordinator and has also taught the classes in which the
student research has been carried out.
The Website
The work or each semester’s students has been separate and independent
from the other classes of other semesters carrying out similar
projects. Thus, each semester’s project has investigated the presence
of Europe-In-America separately, researching and asking questions that
are different from others. It is therefore appropriate that each
semester’s project is presented individually and separately at this
website. Determining the cumulative result of all semester projects
findings is left to the reader. You may click on the appropriate
semester below to see its organization, findings, and the names of
students involved:
