Class Assignment - Fall Term, 2003
Prof. Messmer

Title: Europe In North Jersey and NYC:
The class will engage in a common project of investigating the presence, and organizational links, and influence of ‘Europe’ in Morris County/North Jersey/Manhattan. We will ultimately publish the findings on a class website, on the Drew net, available to the larger internet. There are four phases to this project.
In phase one, (which is outlined below) each student will engage in individual research. This will be an individually graded part of the research exercise.
Phases two and three, using the information compiled by the entire class in phase one, will involve working as teams on further specialized aspects of this project. During phase two, teams will be created that will further investigate and profile the organizations for which they are given responsibility (exact details of assignments in this phase will be provide subsequently). During phase three, smaller sub-groups of each team will be responsible for going off campus and interviewing someone from at least one of the organizations the team is investigating. By the end of phase three, each team will have amassed a large amount of information about the presence and influence of Europe in the geographic area we are researching. A team report will be written, and hard and internet copies will be provided to the instructor and other teams about the organizations (and their role and influence) in our area. A combined team grade will be given for phases two and three to all individual members of the team. This grade will be 70% of the final research project grade for each individual student.
In phase four, each student will be graded on an individual 3-4 page paper written about your experience in the project (what you think about the organization and influence of the organizations, and your interview results and experience). This grade will also include the work done for phase one, and will count for 30% of your final research project grade.

I. First Assignment For Individual Class Members:

You have two weeks to carry out research in which you turn in (in class on October 16th) a two page typed paper with specific information about European organizations that have offices in our area. Do not work together on this phase.

1) complete formal names of the organization
2) complete NJ or Manhattan street addresses
3) if possible, complete European street address
4) US and (if separate) European website addresses
5) phone numbers here (and in Europe if available).
6) what the organization specifically does in our area.

b) Find the above information about two organizations in each of the following four categories of types of organizations:
1) government

3) non-governmental politics/NGO’s
