In London, politics as usual has disappeared.
You witness the changes from a seat in Parliament when the prime
minister is challenged by the opposition. Gone too are the stuffy
British arts. When you talk with painters, catch a band in a pub,
or question writers, composers, actors, and directors in your classroom,
you detect a new artistic generation emerging. And Empire has faded.
The spit-and-polish at Buckingham Palace still dazzles, but a few
blocks away a market's aroma's and accented opinions expose the
new British identity being fashioned by immigrants with little concern
for royal traditions. Nothing in London is usual anymore. The modern
mixes with the medieval, the global grapples with the provincial.
The experimental tests the theoretical. Here, the energy of the
new millennium gathers, and you can sense the electricity.
Academic Program
The London semester offers you the experts and the knowledge to
analyze and appreciate Britian's new culture, its place in the world,
and the trials of its social transformation. Distinguished British
and American faculty guide you through the itellectual landscape
of the new Britian using a lifetime of connections in political
and artistic circles to volunteer insights only insiders possess.
They challenge you to examine not only British culture but also
your own assumptions.
Participants in the London Semester enroll in
a total of sixteen credits, including a required colloquium, taught
by the program's resident director, a member of Drew's campus-based
faculty. Electives are chosen from topics in contemporary British
politics, the history of modern Britian, British political drama,
and British literature. All courses feature field trips and guest
speakers.
Did you know that with
an additional course taken on campus,
London Semester participants could complete a European
Studies minor?
Interested students should visit the European
Studies web page for details.
