Academic Program
June 1 - 30, 2007
Barcelona offers a vast array of cultural institutions,
museums and historical sites as well as access to beach resorts
and culinary excellence. It is one of the most cosmopolitan cities
of the European Union and within Spain it is considered the most
prosperous and industrialized region of the peninsula. Barcelona,
the capital of Cataluna boasts its own language and unique historical
development. It is home to some of the 20th century's most creative
and influential artists such as Picasso, Dali, Gaudi and Miro. We
want our students to know this thriving metropolis and the major
trends in Spanish art and culture, as well as to have a closer look
at Spain's impressive artistic legacy and daily life.

Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB)
All academic facilities are located
in an architectural modernist jewel set on the Hospital de Sant
Pau. There are computers available for student use and several delightful
cafeterias for mid-morning snacks. It is a young, modern academic
institution whose high standards of teaching and research have
mad it one of the foremost academic centers in the higher education
sector.
UAB is located at the historic building UAB Casa Convalescencia,
part of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau modernist complex,
which is situated in the central area of the city known as Eixample.
The construction of this complex, which is close to the Sagrada
Familia Cathedral, began in 1905 and was inaugurated in 1930. The
hospital and the building for teaching modern languages were granted
UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997, important examples of
Modernist architecture by the architect Luis Domenech I Muntaner,
a contemporary of the famous Antoni Gaudi.
Our building, Casa Convalescencia is a unique building, rich in
modernist elements, featuring glass that illuminates the monumental
entrance hall and cupola, as well as the ornate tile work of the
ground floor halls and meeting rooms. Nowadays, UAB Casa Convalescencia
is an impressive academic center, housing UAB Foundation, Institute
of Education Sciences, PhD and Continuing Education School as well
as the Doctor Robert Foundation and the Josep Lapotre Library.
