Requirements for the Major, Minor

All students majoring in music must complete the following courses:
  • MUS 12 or 13/The History of Western Music I or II (4 credits)
  • MUS 27, 28/Form and Analysis I, II (8 credits)
  • MUS 199/Senior Project: Seminar (4 credits)
At least one course (4 credits) from the following:
  • MUS 31/World of Opera and Musical Theater
  • MUS 33/Music of the Whole Earth
  • MUS 34/American Popular Music and All That Jazz
  • MUS 55/Selected Studies in Music
At least two courses (8 credits) from the following:
  • MUS 101/Music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance
  • MUS 103/Music of the Baroque and Classical Periods
  • MUS 111/Music of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
  • MUS 112/Women in Music
At least two courses (8 credits) from the following:
  • MUS 60/Music Composition, repeatable for credit
  • MUS 124/Techniques of Twentieth-Century Composition
  • MUS 136/Electronic Music Composition I
  • MUS 137/Electronic Music Composition II
At least 10 credits from the following:
  • MUS 5/Techniques of the Voice (2 credits)
  • MUS 9/Instrumental/Vocal Instruction (1-4 credits)
  • MUS 15/Chorale (2-8 credits)
  • MUS 17/The Drew Madrigal Singers (1-4 credits)
  • MUS 18/Ear Training and Sight-Singing (2 credits)
  • MUS 22/University Chamber Orchestra (2-8 credits)
  • MUS 24/Selected Ensembles (1-4 credits)
  • MUS 125/Advanced Instrumental/Vocal Instruction (2-8 credits)
A maximum of 16 credits, in any combination, from music instruction and/or performance courses may be counted toward the minimum 128 credits required for the B.A. degree. 

Requirements for the Minor

For a formal minor in music, students must complete at least 24 intermediate and upper level credits in music, chosen in consultation with the department.
