Community Day Brings Fun for Everyone This Saturday, Sept. 21
is the Tenth Annual Community Day, a Fall tradition and a great
way for families to have fun and enjoy entertainment at minimum cost.
The event is held on the Drew campus from noon to 5 p.m. As in past years, Community
Day offers something for everyone and every age. Drew's equestrian team
will perform twice during the afternoon in the 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. time frame.
And Drew's champion fencing team will be on hand to demonstrate skill
and technique. The Madison YMCA tumblers will show their skills as well.
Thanks to the efforts of Drew
students Katya Valasek and Whitney CcMullan , several Drew student clubs
will participate in the celebration. Free ice cream cones will be served
in honor of the 75th Anniversary of Drew's college of liberal arts. Rotary
will offer hotdogs, hamburgers and soft drinks, Begun Palace will offer
authentic Indian cuisine. Baked goods also will be on sale. The children's tent will be
hosting activities for youngsters, including lots of games and prizes.
In the mid afternoon, Suzie Scarecrow will be on hand to entertain with
magic tricks and other fun activities. The popular "pumpkin painting"
booth will be open for business starting shortly after noon. Face painters
will be ready to decorate cheeks and arms. The
always popular hayrides around campus will start early and continue each
half hour until the event shuts down in the late afternoon. Back this year by popular demand
is Drew's own Steve Paddack and his father's dixieland band and fiddle
and banjo players Lew Gelfond and Chuck Winch, who will entertain throughout
the afternoon. Local service clubs will participate
and crafters and artisans will demonstrate and in some cases sell--
examples of various crafts. Madison's Shelly Doyle will show how pottery
is made. Drew grad Dan Gordon will demonstrate his skill in marketry,
which is an intricate woodworking craft. Brad Mattson will offer jewelry
for sale. An organic farmer will offer seasonal vegetables and fruits.
New comers Kathleen Siciliano will offer clay animal sculptures and Kim
Diamond will sell baskets and pottery. Parking is always problematic
at Drew , so the Community Day committee encourages you to walk or bicycle
to the event if possible.
