Drew Fencer Makes NCAA Fencing Championships

Drew sophomore Richard Frank finished 19th in sabre competition in the 2002 National Fencing championships held at Drew March 21 to 24.

Frank defeated fencers from North Carolina, Duke, Penn, Brandeis, and University of California at San Diego. As a one-man team, he scored enough points to place Drew ahead of Boston College and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the overall team standings.

Fencing's answer to the "March Madness" of basketball, the NCAA championships bring together the best fencers in the nation, 144 in all from 27 colleges and universities. All the schools, except Division III Drew and Brandeis, were Division I.

"It was a great time," Frank said. "The best part was being able to represent Drew while we were hosting the tournament and letting people know we had a team, too. I beat some people I wasn't expected to beat."
