Italian Summer Program in Venice

Program

The Drew Summer Program in Venice is an academic program designed to provide students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of Italy in the best possible social, and intellectual environment.

The program will help not only students who plan to minor in Italian, but also students who are interested in the culture and lifestyle of Italy, as well as those who just want complete the language requirements at Drew.

The program is open to all Drew students: credits earned will apply towards a Drew degree and can be used for the Italian minor and the language in context requirement. All students take a total of 8 credit-hours, including the mandatory Italian Culture course (Ital 111/Selected Topics) in English.

Faculty and Staff

Program Director

Dr. Emanuele Occhipinti is Assistant Professor of Italian in the French and Italian Department at Drew. He will supervise students' lodging and will coordinate educational and extracurricular activities, such as field trips, museum tours, and one visit to Florence. Prof. Occhipinti will be available on site to ensure students' general welfare and he will teach the Italian culture and cinema classes, supervise syllabi, tests, final examinations, and final grades.

Prof. Occhipinti holds a Laurea in Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures from the University of Florence, and received his PhD in Italian Literature from Rutgers University.

Faculty

The faculty at the Istituto Venezia have an Italian Laurea and have attended special educational seminars and teaching training programs. Instructors have all extensive experience as teachers of Italian for foreign students. Their teaching methodology is based on a fully communicative approach that promotes and encourages students' active participation, aiming at developing oral and written communication skills.

Cultural Activities

Mask making workshop, trips to Murano, Verona, Trieste or Florence, museums, exhibits.

Eligibility

A completed application including an unofficial transcript and one letter of recommendation are required. All students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing from the time of application until the end of the program .

Fees

The cost includes the following:

  • Airfare
  • 8 credits of summer school tuition
  • pick-up at airport in Venice
  • room in shared apartments and one meal per day
  • some group dinners
  • 8- hour mask making workshop
  • art history classes
  • local transportation
  • museum tickets
  • trips to Murano (with glass blowing demonstration), Verona, and one overnight excursion to Florence or Trieste (TBD)
