Welcome to a new, exciting stage in your life!
"How is College Different from High School?"
"High school is a TEACHING ENVIRONMENT in which you acquire facts and skills. College is a LEARNING ENVIRONMENT in which you take responsibility for thinking through and applying what you have learned. Understanding some of the important differences between high school and college may help you achieve a smoother transition." Click on this link to read this pamphlet prepared by the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX available at http://www.smu.edu/alec/transition.html
During the transition to college, you will encounter many new and exciting things including: separation from family, sharing close living quarters with strangers, making new friends, higher academic pressure, new freedom -- the freedom to make new choices related to food, sleep, study habits, substance use, sexual behaviors, for example. It will be a stimulating challenge to balance social, academic, and other life responsibilities.
You may perceive some of these life changes as stressful. Healthy Transitions is a resource and networking tool for Drew students. It contains information to help facilitate a "healthy" transition into college. It is designed to provide information, resources, links, digitized videos and networking tools (discussion boards, public or private online chats) to help you meet your new life challenges with relative ease.
Please use Healthy Transitions throughout the year and please provide feedback via the brief evaluation forms located at the bottom of most webpages.
New information will be added to the various topic pages on a daily basis, and online chats will be scheduled in response to trends noticed in your postings to the topic-specific Discussion Boards and and/or the responses to the webpage evaluation forms.
Healthy Transitions is for YOUR benefit. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
