FREN 1: Fundamentals of Oral and Written French I (4)
An introduction to the French spoken and written language.  Covers the basics of the French language through videos, readings, and media from Francophone cultures.  Interactive practice in the classroom and use of multimedia lab, oral, written, and computer-assisted activities.

FREN 20: Fundamentals of Oral and Written French II (4)
A continuation of FREN I. Designed for students who have already covered the basics of French, but have not yet been exposed to all tenses and other grammar fundamentals. Videos, interactive practice in the classroom and multimedia lab and oral, written, and computer-assisted activities. Prerequisite: FREN 1

FREN 30: Intermediate French (4)
A continuation of FREN 20. Review of basic grammar; development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through films, discussion, Francophone articles and literary texts, compositions, multimedia lab and computer-assisted activities. A prerequisite for FREN 100, 101 and 102. Prerequisite: FREN 20

FREN 100:  Surf, Watch, Talk: French Popular Culture (4)

A conversation class on popular culture in France.  Discussions, readings, and blog writing.  Topics include popular TV shows, fashion, food, popular language, current music trends, cyberculture, and sports.  Prerequisite: FREN 30 or equivalent.

FREN 101: Advanced Conversation (4)
A conversation class on current events and contemporary themes in France and the Francophone world. Course seeks to enhance oral fluency through class discussions, debates, and oral presentations on recent topics in the French media. Written practice through media analysis, press reviews, and short papers. May be taken concurrently with FREN 101. Prerequisite: FREN 30 or the equivalent.

FREN 104A: Literary Analysis: The Games People Play (2)
This course develops reading fluency and oral practice through a study of selected themes drawn from plays, poetry and fiction in the French literary tradition of the 16th to 18th centuries. This sequence is required for French majors and for more advanced topics courses. Prerequisites: FREN 100, 101 or 102, or entrance by placement.

FREN 104B: Literary Analysis: Strangers and Misfits (2)
A continuation of 104A. This module examines French fiction and poetry written since 1850. Required for French majors and for more advanced topics courses. Prerequisites: FREN 100, 101 or 102, or entrance by placement.

Topic: Cross-Cultural Perspective

FREN 122:  North African Francophone Literature (4)

An investigation of the major components of Moroccan, Algerian, and Tunisian patterns of culture as seen in French-language literary texts.  The historical background of Berber, Arab-Muslim, and Jewish cultural influences as well as the French impact on the Maghreb will be treated.  Conducted in French.  Prerequisite: FREN 104 A/B or the equivalent.

FREN 130A: Advanced Composition and Stylistics I (2 credits-First ˝ of the semester)

FREN 130B: Advanced Composition and Stylistics II (2 credits-Second ˝ of the semester)

This advance course in stylistics enables students to refine their writing skills and learn to write in a variety of styles.  Review of advanced grammar, vocabulary building, editing, and some translation from English to French.  Students write a collective newspaper (130A) and a collective novel (130B).  Prerequisite: FREN 100, 101, or 102.

FREN 154: Contemporary French Theater (4)

Representative works of French playwrights of the 20th century, such as Satre, Anouilh, Ionesco, Camus, and Duras.  New trends emerging in the 21st century will also be studied.  Prerequisite: FREN 104.

FREN 111: Cultures in Crisis: 20th-Century French and Francophone Literatures (taught in English) (4)

A course on twentieth-century French and Francophone fiction portraying moments of cultural crisis.  Open to seniors and very exceptional juniors with senior credits.  Discussion seminar, graduate level.

FREN 194: Independent Study (4)
A tutorial course open to juniors and seniors. Students investigate a chosen topic in French or Francophone literature or language and culture under the guidance of the French department faculty. One meeting weekly; oral and written reports. Prerequisite: 12 credits of advanced work in French with a B average and approval of the department.
