Natasha Trethewey won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for Native Guard, her 2006 collection about black Union soldiers during the U.S. Civil War.  Trethewey's poems about cultural memory and ethnic identity have been winning prizes since she published her first collection, Domestic Work, in 2000. She is an Associate Professor at Atlanta’s Emory University.

Emily Raboteau, author of The Professor's Daughter, teaches at the City College of New York. Her short fiction has appeared in Best American Short Stories, Best American Mystery Stories, Tin House, Callaloo,  StoryQuarterly, The Gettysburg Review and elsewhere. She is at work on a book of nonfiction about Exodus movements in the Black Diaspora, tentatively titled Searching for Zion.
