Specialized Honors: writing a creative thesis
Under the terms of Specialized Honors, Drew students may elect to write a creative thesis if they have "focused in creative or performance areas." Students who wish to write a creative thesis that is poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction must be writing minors and also either major or minor in English (there are no exceptions to this rule). Students who successfully complete the thesis graduate with specialized honors in English.

All creative theses must be accompanied by a substantial essay explaining the goals and process of the project. In the case of creative theses written for the English department, this generally takes the form of a 15-20 page introduction that discusses other similar works, analyzing similarities and differences between them and the thesis and placing the thesis in a broader artistic context. Details will be agreed upon by the candidate and his or her committee as the project evolves.

Creative theses in English must be approved by the creative writing faculty, so students interested in this option should speak to the Chair of the Writing Program, Peggy Samuels, in the spring of their junior year. Students should also familiarize themselves with the guidelines and deadlines listed on the Specialized Honors website and in the Specialized Honors Booklet, available from the director of the Specialized Honors Program.
