College of Liberal Arts Academic Integrity Policy Drew University has established standards of academic integrity and procedures governing violations of them, and has published those standards in its Academic Integrity Policy. These basic standards apply to all work done at Drew, and students are expected to study and comply with these principles. Students come to Drew with a variety of academic preparations. For this reason, it may be appropriate to treat a first violation of academic integrity as an opportunity for education. This might be especially appropriate in cases of improper or insufficient citation or excessive collaboration, particularly if the offender is a first year student. In such cases, if the student, the instructor, and the Dean of the College agree that it is appropriate, the faculty member bringing the accusation may elect to resolve the matter without a full hearing before the Committee on Academic Integrity. One resolution might require the student to revise the offending assignment and resubmit it to the instructor of the course, perhaps after consulting with a writing tutor at the Writing Center. In other circumstances, a “make up” assignment might be more appropriate. If the resubmitted assignment demonstrates mastery of the standards of academic integrity previously violated, there will be no further penalty, and the faculty member will determine a grade for the assignment and the course as he or she sees fit. When this alternative resolution procedure is invoked, this form and
a copy of all relevant documentation will be placed on file in the office
of the Dean of the College, where it will remain until the file is destroyed
(see Daniel's’ Dictionary for further information on the handling of student
files). This documentation will be considered at the penalty phase of the
hearing if the student is found to have committed another breach of academic
integrity.
