Latin 30 - Elementary Latin III

Course Description

This third-semester Latin course is designed to bring students from the elementary level to the intermediate level where they can begin to read Latin authors with some degree of comfort and enjoyment. Particular goals to be achieved include:
  • Improving Latin vocabulary and stem recognition
  • Using word-order to read better
  • Reading in context
  • Reduced-stress sight-reading
  • Basic Composition
Along the way, students will become more familiar with various aspects of Roman culture, including history, mythology and social customs.

  • Instructor: Prof. Muccigrosso, x3029, <jmuccigr@drew.edu>, Office hours: TBA; or by appt.
  • Course entry in the catalogue
  • Meeting time: MWF from 1.15 to 2.20 in SWB 204.
  • Coursepack to be handed out ($5 charge)
  • Grading: Grades will be based on performance on exams, quizzes, homework, as well as attendance and participation.
    • 60% Exams (3, with corrections, including the final)
      • You must take the final in order to pass the class.
    • 15% Quizzes (usually announced)
      • No make-up quizzes will be given
      • The lowest quiz grade will be dropped
    • 10% Homework
    • 15% Participation
    • Attendance
      • 1 unexcused absence allowed, subsequent absences cost 1/4 grade each. This penalty will be subtracted from the final grade calculated on the basis of the other criteria just listed. For example, if you are absent without an excuse three times, the first time is free but the next two add up to 1/2 grade, so the maximum grade you could obtain would be an A-. If you were absent five times, it would be a B+. And so on.
      • See Dean Lawler's office for excused absence forms.
  • Improved performance throughout the semester will be reflected in the final grade
  • Final: TBA by Registrar
