German civilians were also ordered to view the bodies of the murdered Russian, Czech and French inmates of the Flossenburg camp. The fact that women and children were forced to view the grisly bodies at close range was later made the subject of a complaint to the U.S. armed forces. All the American soldiers present during these events were accused of committing crimes against humanity. Although some people, like Senator Bourke Hickenlooper of Iowa, condemned the conduct of the U.S. armed forces and General Paton, nothing ever developed from these accusations.
