Professional Biography
Dr. Afeworki Mascio is an immunologist/medical microbiologist with a broad background and experience in public health. At Drew University, he teaches courses in virology, immunology and microbiology, and regularly offers senior seminars on current health issues such as emerging infectious diseases and the provision of health care. He has also co-directed Drew International Seminars (DIS) to Eritrea and Ghana addressing health issues and the politics of development in an African setting.
Dr. Mascio has served as a consultant to several international health organizations, including the UN, on health issues particularly as they relate to the developing world. In 1994-96, as a senior Fulbright Fellow, Dr. Mascio taught immunology and molecular biology at the University of Asmara in Eritrea, worked on HIV/AIDS projects with the Department of Health, and consulted on numerous development and education projects there. He cares deeply about the relationship between scientific research and governmental policy-making, and in recent years his research interests have shifted more towards the interface between biomedicine and public health.
Dr. Mascio has led Drew International Seminars (for Drew students) to Eritrea and China, and was instrumental in establishing the Drew University semester program in Eritrea. |
