Krista White, M.A., M.Phil., MLIS
Visual Resources Curator

B.A. Art History, Colorado State University
M.A. Art History, University of Colorado, Boulder
M.Phil. Anthropology of Religion, Drew University

In May, 2008, Krista graduated with an MLIS degree from Rutgers' School of Communication, Information and Library Science, where her course work concentrated on digital libraries and metadata standards. In her role as Visual Resource Curator of the Art History Department, she spearheads the Art History Department's involvement in the Drew Digital Imaging Work Group, which is building a digital image database for use by faculty and staff across the university. Krista also works as the Training Coordinator in Instructional Technology Services.

Krista recently began to develop a metadata schema to extend the VRA Core 4.0 standard for use with images in the sciences, engineering, mathematics and technology. Documentation on the VRA Core 4.0 STEM extension is available in MSWord and PDF formats:

Related to the STEM extension is Krista's recent work as the Project Research Analyst for the SENCER Digital Library Project (see page 4 of the newsletter) set to launch in August, 2008. In her capacity as research analyst, Krista worked as the Rutgers' Controlled Vocabularies team project manager under the supervision of Dr. Claire McInerney. The Rutgers team is responsible for creating controlled vocabularies for documents in the SENCER digital library based upon Sears and Library of Congress subject headings. The SENCER Digital Library is set to be hosted by Carleton College Science Education Resource Center.

The subject headings developed by the Rutgers Controlled Vocabularies team may be of help to visual resources professionals and others using descriptive metadata in an attempt to catalog images in STEM disciplines. Rutgers team members Melody Townley and Kerri Hueftle have generously consented to share their controlled vocabulary work to help with the cataloging of STEM images.

Krista recently gave a paper on the STEM extension at the VRA Annual Conference in San Diego at the session entitled, "Interloping Images: Expanding Access for Those Outside of the Norm." The PowerPoint presentation for her talk is also available:

Krista's personal interests include Haitian art, religion and culture. She spent 9 years in observer participation at a small, Roman Catholic church as part of her work in the Anthropology of Religion. Krista finished her M.Phil. from Drew University in October of 2006, concentrating on learning about the experiences of Haitian Roman Catholics in the Newark Archdiocese. Krista speaks passable German and very bad Haitian Kreyol.
