Membership Criteria

The Institute is staffed by industrial scientists of outstanding, proven ability. Appointment as a RISE fellow is highly selective. An Institute advisory board and an academic selection committee consisting of the dean and the science department chairs review and evaluate applications.

The Institute pays no stipend to fellows, each of whom is expected to obtain research funding from conventional sources such as former employers, foundations, or federal granting organizations. The University provides the Institute with facilities such as libraries, computer and media-service support, and utilities. The University also assists the Institute in seeking additional financial support from private foundations and the government. Fellows are free to do consulting that may produce additional income.
