The Charles A. Dana Research Institute for Scientists Emeriti (RISE) at Drew University offers undergraduates a unique opportunity to engage in research under the supervision of retired industrial scientists. Since 1981 Institute fellows have guided the research efforts of approximately one hundred students majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. The program is believed to be the only one of its kind in the nation and in 1989 received the prestigious Merck Innovation Award for Undergraduate Science Education.

Financial Support and History

In the fall of 1981 the Charles A. Dana Foundation awarded Drew a challenge grant that made the Institute a reality. Over the next three years additional support was provided by over 20 corporations and foundations with headquarters in the area, including Exxon Research and Engineering Co., CIBA-Geigy, Merck and Co., Sandoz Inc., the Allied Chemical Foundation, and the Charles Edison Trust. The capstone gift came from the Pew Memorial Trust.

A new $250,000 biology laboratory in l992~made possible with contributions from CIBA-Geigy, Hoechst-Celanese, Merck. Schering-Plough, and the Mellon Foundation marked a major expansion of the Institute's facilities.

Since the completion of the Dana Institute, support for the annual operating budget has come chiefly from DuPont, Merrill Dow, Exxon Research and Engineering Co., the Schering-Plough Foundation, CIBA-Geigy, Bristol-Myers Squibb, AT&T Bell Laboratories, and Hoechst-Celanese.

The late Dr. George deStevens, former executive vice president and director of research at CIBA-Geigy, founded the Institute, and directed it until his death in 1995. Dr. deStevens was internationally known for his discovery of the two most widely prescribed drugs for high blood pressure.
